Terra Brasilis

Terra Brasilis" inventively combines art with science, natural science and history. This richly illustrated and comprehensive book zooms in on the natural history of Brazil. For centuries the vast country with its particular geography and biodiversity has attracted explorers, colonialists and scientists. Early maps and the descriptions of unfamiliar species of animals and plants show how the colonial relation between Europe and Brazil has contributed to the discovery of the natural wealth of the country. Artists too have constantly drawn on everything that the country of Brazil has to offer: still lifes with fruit that was exotic at the time, landscapes, sculptures, silverware and numerous portraits of the various autochtonous peoples. 0Exhibition: ING Cultuurcentrum, Kunstberg, Brussel, October 20, 2011 to February 12, 2012.
