Academic Encounters Listening and Speaking Level 1 The Natural World engages students through interviews and academic lectures on stimulating topics from the fields of earth science and biology. Academic Encounters prepares students for university study by replicating the texts and tasks that they will encounter in different academic disciplines.  Academic Skills: To help students succeed in college, Academic Encounters teaches critical academic skills. A set of icons highlight which skills are being practiced in each exercise. Authentic and Adapted Texts: Students interact with authentic academic content (adapted at lower levels). Reading passages come from college textbooks, and academic lectures were created using transcripts of actual classroom lectures. Sustained content: Academic Encounters’ sustained content approach to language learning immerses students in an academic discipline. This approach creates an authentic college experience, preparing students for the rigor of later coursework. Audio and video links: Students click on the audio icon and hear the audio recording.
