Manuela Mena, Denise Milan

About this book

Stone: the hidden universe, brings together the most significant work of Denise Milan (São Paulo 1954) during the thirty years of trajectory of the plastic artist. The rocks, stones, white and pure quartz geodes, amethysts, or fossils of the great Ammonites are the symbols of her artistic production and the themes explored throughout her work, brought to light by the constant relationship that the artist draws between the man and the stone, especially as to its perpetuity in contrast to the ephemerality of the other. The book opens with an essay by Manuela Mena - art historian and curator of the Museo del Prado in Madrid - which focuses on the artist's phases, in a detailed analysis. The multiplicity of Milan is then approached along with its little known facets, revealed by their photocolors, light sculptures, drawings, video-art, and studies for their works. The book brings, justly, images of all these moments through her works and also has an interview with curator Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro to the artist. Denise Milan Denise Milan is in a moment of expansion and great visibility of her artistic work. In addition to composing the team of invited artists to carry out individual projects at the Bienal de São Paulo 2018, curated by Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro, she holds an individual exhibition at Galeria Lume, curated by Marcello Dantas. Having the mineral kingdom as her creative axis, Denise Milan performs works in the areas of public art, sculpture, performing arts, poetry, print and video art. She created and directed the Ópera das Pedras, a contemporary opera and the art-education project Spectacle of the Earth, with annual courtships with children, addressing the integration of the human being with his city and the Earth. In São Paulo, she participated in the International Biennial, Museum of Modern Art (MAM), Museum of Art of São Paulo (MASP), Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC), Galeria Lume and Sesc. Abroad, its main exhibitions were: Barbican Center (London); PSONE, Art in General (New York); EXPO 2000 (Hanover); EXPO 90, Hakone and Open Air Museum (Osaka); Museum of Contemporary Art and Art Institute and Cultural Center (Chicago); in the Palazzo del Monte Frumentario (Assisi): Wilson Center (Washington D.C.); in the Gallery DArchitecture (Paris).
