This is a study of the ransoming of Christian captives in the medieval Mediterranean, performed as a work of charity by the Order of Merced, or the Mercedarians. Thematically, it is related to the crusades, the cultural confrontation between Christians and Muslims, and to the development of charity orders within the medieval Catholic Church.
