This book introduces students to qualitative methodologies used to study film and television, including auteur, genre, and star studies; semiotics, structuralism, and psychoanalysis; poststructuralism and postmodernism, various aspects of cultural studies, as well as contemporary approaches to race/ethnicity, nation, gender, and sexuality.b Students are introduced to the historical development of each approach, as well as the vocabulary, scholars, and concepts germane to them. Each chapter ends with a case study of a selected film and television texts, analyzed from the perspective of that chapter¿s particular methodology.
