Mystery and promise1993

The idea of revelation is grounded in faith's conviction that through the word of God, manifested decisively in Christ, we encounter a promising and self-emptying mystery. Encouraged by the developments of Vatican II and contemporary theology, this book argues that revelation comes in the form of a divine promise which upon reflection turns out to be nothing less than God's own self-donation to the world. Viewed from another perspective, revelation is th gift of an image of divine humility which renders reality intelligible in an unprecedented way. This image, presented explicitly in the crucifixion of Jesus, illuminates the mystery that surrounds us, the cosmos out of which we have evolved, the tortuous history of humanity, and the ambiguities of personal existence.
