"Monteforte Toledo uses his fiction to unveil the ravages of capitalism and imperialism on Central America. Included here are 15 short stories from the period 1939-48, all previously published, but newly reworked by Monteforte. The best stories are those in the section entitled 'Cuentos raros,' centered on intellectual experiences derived from his readings. Other stories now seem dated, and most politicize human situations.
