Macomb's shaded relief map was published in 1860. Because of the Civil War, Newberry's accompanying text was not published until 1876. This first scientific documentary of the region and details day to day rigors of period exploration on horseback, remarkable paleontologic discoveries, and stratigraphic observations. The map shows the expedition route, camps, and astronomical cartographic stations, as well as routes of former explorations.
