About this book

Translated and edited by prominent Scandinavian historians Rasmus Anderson and George Stephens, this volume includes the Icelandic sagas of Fridthjof the Bold and Thorstein, the third son of Erik the Red and youngest brother of Leif Ericsson. The Thorstein saga tells the story of the young Thorstein Ericsson, but begins with the journeys of his older brothers, Leif and Thorvald, to Vinland. Briefly recounting Leif's discovery and founding of the settlement, the saga continues with Thorvald's trip to join his brother. When Thorvald and his men reach Vinland, they are attacked and killed by natives, called Skraelings. Hearing of his brother's death, Thorstein sails to retrieve his body. However, his expedition gets lost and he and his crew undergo a perilous journey.
