Raw materials

Sandpaper, drainpipes, plywood and pots of paint - artists have been making increasing use of such prosaic materials from DIY stores since the 1960s. 'Raw Materials' presents sculptures, videos, photographs and room installations by 35 international artists and provides a comprehensive overview of this remarkable aspect of contemporary art for the first time. The familiar everyday materials generate surprising aesthetic effects and are sometimes treated with a lot of humour and wit. They not only address the nature of artistic reality but also the mechanisms of perception in the viewer.
