Follows shifts and continuities in Gonzalez' ideas on democracy, globalization and neoliberalism, as well as his influence in academe (he headed several major academic departments and educational institutions, including UNAM). Culminates with reference to his work in defense of Latin American indigenous peoples which earned him UNESCO award in 2003.
