The statistics on hazardous chemical waste are staggering. Over 85 billion pounds of waste are generate din the United States every year. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that at least 90% of these toxic substances are disposed of improperly and unsafely. There are more than 50,000 dump sites for hazardous wastes in the country, involving every state in the union, and only a few of these sites are monitored to any degree.
