A collection of papers from the October 2000 international conference "Europe-Japan- Ukraine: Routes to Democratization of State and Legal Systems," cosponsored by the V. M. Korets'kii Institute of State and Law, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and the Japan Fund. Nearly 500 scholars, parliamentarians, and governmental and party officials from Ukraine, Japan, the UK, Germany, Russia, Poland, France, and Belarus participated. The conference was divided into the following sessions: general problems in democratizing state and legal systems (experiences of Ukraine, Japan, and European countries); democratization as a principle of governance: contemporary parliamentarianism, problems and prospects; problems of harmonization [international standardization] of contemporary legal systems.
