About this book

The Red Apple is a stunning new apartment complex on Wijnhaven Island. The slender high-rise section forms a succinct contribution to the Rotterdam skyline. In addition, the building comprises a horizontal wedge-shaped structure, which includes a spacious atrium. The groundfloor contains public amenities situated round an arcade. The name Red Apple is derived from the vivid red colour of the aluminium panels in the façade, but also refers to the historical function of the location as a place where apples used to be transshipped. It is obviously also a reference to the high-rise capital New York. This publication gives a written and visual account of the history of the area, the vision concerning the urban development of Wijnhaven Island and the origin of this remarkable building.
