About this book

The reason these headlines appealed to me is because they were never intended to be funny in the first place. That they're checked and rechecked by a proofreader makes them funnier still. In this book we've deliberately avoided using headlines from tabloid or so-called "pulp" newspapers because the double entendres found in them are often intentional. It's when they're not but show up anyway in the local gazette, that you have to laugh. In the same way that a joke is funnier in church, a silly headline seems even sillier when it appears in a respected "organ of the people." I'd like to thank the viewers of The Tonight Show who contributed the headlines that appear here and have made it possible for me to donate all author proceeds to charity. - Introduction.
