It was impossible for Valda to do what her stepfather asked. He was French and the idea of arranged marriages came naturally to him. But she was not and the thought of being wed to a man she did not love -- did not even know -- repulsed her. "But Valda," her stepfather cautioned, "you have never chosen a gown without help.
