Ignorance, superstition, priestcraft and immorality were the hallmarks of the church in England in the fourteenth century, under the dominance of a degenerate papacy. Against such a background rose John Wycliffe, the 'Morning Star of the Reformation'. He was one of the truly great men of English history. John Wycliffe and his followers, the Lollards, believed and preached that man's life must be ruled by God's Word and not inherited tradition. It was with this in mind that Wycliffe completed the first ever translation of the Bible into English.
