Raimundo Carrero

About this book

"Re-edition of one of the author's early novels. Narrative is introduced by famed writer Ariano Suassuna, who places novel within the Movimento Armorial that he founded in 1970. This movement identified and helped stimulate Northeastern literature, and Northeastern arts in general, as carriers of historical traits linked to the Medieval and Baroque ages. Carrero's novel conveys epic stances in the conquest of territory, as carried out by a woman. The female protagonist, a heroic warrior, is surrounded by paraphernalia from the Middle Ages such as banners, martyrdom, and battle scenes, depicted through dynamic events taking place in the Northeastern sertão. She regards the birth of a daughter as a defeat - prefering a boy whom she could turn into a 'real' tiger of the backlands. Her demeanor is reversed when a nephew is born"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
