Women who made a difference

About this book

In the past, women often had to fight to be heard or respected. The three determined women in this book all fought against prejudice. Gertrude Bell was denied her right to a first-class honours degree in modern history at Oxford University, simply because she was a woman. In spite of this, she went on to play an important role in diplomacy and international relations and helped construct the borders of modern-day Iraq. Helen Keller, deaf and blind, fought for the rights of the disabled and demanded to be treated as an equal. Rosa Parks, of African descent, fought discrimination and demanded equal rights for people of all colours. She became an icon of the Civil Rights Movement in the USA. These three women were inspirational and brave. Each was a pioneer of her time, and each made a difference to our lives today.
