World-class scholars have come together for this volume to provide an authoritative assessment of the problems of transformation in the Balkan countries. Most writing to date on economic transition in the former Communist economies of Europe has concentrated on the generally more successful countries of Central Europe, especially the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. The importance of political factors in the economics of transition is also a relatively neglected area of research.
