The total value of contributions received by the United Nations system for operational activities in 2006 amounted to $17.2 billion. This total represents an increase of 0.4 per cent in nominal terms, and a decrease of 2.0 per cent in real terms, over the contributions received in 2005. The expenditures of the United Nations system for operational activities in 2006 amounted to $16.4 billion. The present report, prepared in collaboration with the organizations of the United Nations system, is submitted in response to General Assembly resolutions 35/81, 59/250, and 62/208, in which the Assembly requested the Secretary-General: (a) to continue to broaden and improve the annual financial report to the operational activities segment of the Economic and Social Council; (b) to build a comprehensive, sustainable and consistent financial data and reporting system for the operational activities for development of the United Nations system, in a coherent way; and (c) to provide a concise statement of progress and planned activities.
