About this book
In 1980, Jane Maxwell is a young Anglo-American history scholar tracing her family's ancestry. She is excited to have recently discovered that her family may be related to the aristocratic Herbert's of Powis. While she and her scientist husband, Will, are on their honeymoon in New York, he is killed - execution style. It is a tragic case of mistaken identity and Jane is powerless to intervene. In 1715, the Earl of Nithsdale joins the doomed Jacobite rebellion for Scottish independence. The cause is lost and the Earl is locked in the Tower with other nobles and is sentenced to be beheaded. His wife refuses to let this happen and in a daring rescue, she and her husband flee to Europe. On the first anniversary of Will's death, Jane is swept away into 1715 and as the Countess of Nithsdale she is the one who rescues the Earl from the Tower of London.
