Abstract: The psychological factors that prevent individuals from exercising adequate congtrol of their weight and eating habits are reviewed. Chapters written by a variety of specialists discuss in depth the biological, psychological, and social factors which contribute to obesity, as well as personality and behavior characteristics caused by obesity. Obesity during adolescence, depression, and stress are discussed. Additional chapters are devoted to methods of treating obesity: group therapy, behavioral approaches, multimodal therapy, hypnotherapy, and exercise. Reasons for treatment failure also are discussed.
