About this book
This collection contains modifed records of the original 1970 Public Use tapes (see ICPSR 0018). The original records consisted of 120 character household records and 120 character person records, whereas the new modified records are rectangular (each person record is combined with the corresponding household record) with a length of 188, after the deletion of some items. Additional information was added to the data records including: typical educational requirement for current occupation, occupational prestige score, and group identification code. The following procedures were used in the initial construction of this dataset from the census tapes: (a)age--all ages included, (b)majority--one percent of the majority from each 1970 file was included, (c)blacks--ten percent of each file was included, (d)Mexican Americans--Mexican Americans outside the five southwestern states are included, but they have the group identification of the ''other Hispanics.'' This dataset also includes two new variables: the typical educational requirement for the occupation the person had five years earlier, and the occupational prestige score of the occupation the person had five years earlier.
