The book undergoes the concepts of "sex" and "gender" both theoretically and practically. It describes how the two terms can be adopted as interpretation key both in the daily social and political context and in the much more intellectual and cultural one like in the literary field. Examples taken form the Italian political context i.e. measures of improving systems of equal opportunity in the actual political government and from the German speaking literary world i.e. analysis of texts on specific topics like motherhood, abortion, conciliation between family and job are quoted in order to explain the multi meaning of the Gender Studies approach.
