Suicide: Its History, Literature, Jurisprudence, Causation, and Prevention
1885
In 1885, a Victorian Deputy Coroner undertook something unprecedented: a systematic examination of suicide across history, literature, and law, drawing on his own experiences with the dead. W. Wynn Westcott had stood over the bodies of those who had chosen to end their own lives, and he brought that grim firsthand knowledge to a book attempting something no English work had done before. He traces suicide from ancient Rome, where it could be an honorable act, through the Christian condemnation that defined his own era, examining how societies have perpetually struggled with this most intimate of violence. The book interweaves statistical anxiety about rising suicide rates with philosophical inquiry, literary references, and the practical question of prevention. Westcott writes not as a distant scholar but as a man who has spoken with the grieving, seen the aftermath, and wrestled with what drives a person to that point. It is a product of its time: moralistic in places, certain of binary truths about mental illness, yet also remarkably empathetic compared to the brutish Victorian institutional responses it critiques. The result is a window into how a society that had largely banned the discussion of suicide finally began, however tentatively, to name it.
