Night Thoughts

Night Thoughts

Hanford Lennox Gordon

Night Thoughts collects the contemplative verses of Hanford Lennox Gordon, a Scottish-American who traded a brief stint in the First Minnesota Regiment for the quietude of legal practice and service as a land registrar in Monticello and St. Cloud, Minnesota. These are poems written in the small hours, when the frontier goes still and the mind turns inward. Gordon's verse moves through landscapes both physical and psychological - the vast Minnesota skies, the loneliness of the lawman's office, the ghosts of Scottish heritage meeting the reality of American frontier life. There's no bombast here, no celebration of manifest destiny. Instead, the collection offers something rarer: the interior weather of a thoughtful man observing his world with careful, sometimes aching attention. The poems carry the particular melancholy of the 19th-century frontier intellectual - someone caught between cultures, between ambitions and limitations, between the noise of ambition and the silence that truly sustains. These verses endure because nighttime has not changed. The questions Gordon asked - about belonging, about loss, about the passage of time across empty landscapes - remain our questions still.
