London Labour and the London Poor Volume III

London Labour and the London Poor Volume III

Henry Mayhew

In the 1850s, Henry Mayhew did something revolutionary: he listened. Armed with a notebook and an unflinching curiosity, he walked into the lives of London's poorest and asked them to speak for themselves. The result is a book that reads less like a Victorian tract and more like the most compelling oral history you'll ever encounter. Volume III of his monumental study expands his portrait of the city's underbelly: the costermongers hawking fish on muddy corners, the seamstresses stitching through the night for pennies, the beggars and buskers and shoe-blacks who made up a parallel economy invisible to most Londoners. Mayhew categorizes them with sociologist's precision but writes about them with a journalist's eye for the telling detail. You will remember the specific words of a child laborer describing her twelve-hour day, the exact earnings of a street seller on a rainy Tuesday, the pride and shame in a working man's voice as he explains why he can't feed his family. This is social investigation as literary art, a book that made the comfortable uncomfortable and gave the poor something priceless: a record that they existed, that their suffering mattered, that someone was paying attention.
