Das Lämmchen
1824
In a small German village, young Christine braves an approaching storm to gather wild strawberries in the forest, her sick mother believes the fruit might restore her health. During the tempest, Christine discovers a trembling lamb abandoned and alone. She carries it home, intending to keep it, but soon learns the lamb belongs to a wealthy farmer in the next village. Despite her deep attachment and the comfort the lamb has brought her during her mother's illness, Christine must choose: keep the animal she has come to love, or return it and do what she knows is right. Written in 1824 by Christoph von Schmid, this is a story about that choice and what follows when a child follows her conscience over her heart's desire. The tale sweeps from darkness into light, from illness and loss toward unexpected grace, asking what it truly costs to do right, and what rewards virtue brings.
