Biography
Educator, mountaineer.
Born at Derby, England, on 1 July 1942, he received degrees in Mathematics from the University of London (BSc, Queen Mary’s College), University of Colorado (MSc) and the Australian National University (PhD). In 1969, he came to the University of Manitoba, where he taught Applied Mathematics until retirement in 2004. In the 1980s, he revived the Manitoba Chapter of the Alpine Club of Canada and received the Club’s Silver Rope Award for Leadership in 1989. He led a group that made the first ascent of Mount Manitoba in the Yukon, for which he was inducted into the Order of the Buffalo Hunt in 1992. He died as a result of a fall while climbing on Mount Victoria in Banff National Park on 7 August 2013.
