Biography
Boyd D. Holtan, born in Forest City, Iowa, is an American mathematics educator. He earned an Associate of Arts degree from Waldorf Junior College [now Waldorf University], Forest City, Iowa, in 1948; a Bachelor degree from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, in 1950; a Master of Arts degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, in 1954; and a Doctor of Education from the University of Illinois in 1963.
Dr. Holtan was Professor of Education (Mathematics Education) at West Virginia University, Morgantown, from 1967-1996; and has been Professor Emeritus at West Virginia University, Morgantown, since 1997; previously a mathematics teacher in secondary schools; instructor of NSF Institutes for junior high school mathematics teachers. Dr. Holtan was coordinator of student teachers for secondary school mathematics. He was visiting professor at University of Illinois, summer 1965, and National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow at New York University, 1971.
Dr. Holtan was with the United States Army from 1951-1953. Member National Council Teachers Mathematics West Virginia Council Teachers Mathematics Appalachian Blacksmiths Association (treasurer since 1978), Phi Delta Kappa.
