Biography
Charles Martin (1884-1934) was a prolific illustrator who published in Le Rire and in Le Sourire early in his career. At that time his drawings still have a Belle Epoque esthetic reminiscent of the likes of Hermann-Paul and Toulouse-Lautrec. His style evolves quickly, and he becomes a frequent contributor to La Vie Parisienne from 1914 to 1920. Martin’s drawings then become more art deco in nature. Throughout his career, sexuality, innuendo and social commentary, all of which were topics that sold, were prominent in his oeuvre. After the war, Martin started to illustrate more for books.-Armstrong Art
