The story
Who Tim is
Timothy R.J. Eveland was born in 1991 and writes from Victoria, British Columbia. He studies medieval history and builds what he calls realistic medieval fantasy: fiction grounded in how people actually lived when we built with stone and farmed by hand. His public hope is blunt. When we are an interplanetary species, people out there should know more about the real Middle Ages than we do now.
How he got here
He grew up in foster care, left home before he was ready, and spent his early twenties surviving through music, ministry support, and hard lessons. When he was twenty-two he shifted from rapping to fiction, not because the stage called him, but because the writing did. Manuscripts piled up in a shabby flat. Nearly a dozen books still unpublished. Isolation in garrets and basements through his late twenties is what made him fluent in medieval history and storytelling craft. He writes as Jon Stone on the page; Tim in person. Rest in peace Carmen Jones, his late foster mother, the strongest woman he says he ever met.
The book
Virgin Killer: Sick with the Fairies is a dark fantasy satire inspired by Hitchcock’s Psycho and Sesame Street’s The Monster at the End of This Book. Norman Baynes (serial killer, split personalities, poet hunting a publisher) moves through a messed-up world where humans are rare. Adventure, horror, and satire about pandemics and shifting norms. The catalog credit is Jon Stone; the partnership is with Tim.
The Lex partnership
Tim came to Lex to dust the book off for audiobook, not a demo reel: the whole thing. We produced all nineteen chapters as a single-narrator scored audiobook through PROSE, one storyteller carrying every role, Epidemic music and SFX under the voice, and author feedback folded into the master. The finished book is live on Lex.

How it was made
PROSE, not raw TTS
Virgin Killer was produced on PROSE, Lex’s performance layer for long-form narration. Raw engine output drifts at chapter joins, thins on dialogue, and sounds like takes glued together. PROSE holds one continuous performance across the manuscript: steady register, acted dialogue, seam-checked joins, and human QA before anything ships. That is why nineteen chapters still sound like the same narrator at the end of the book as at the start.
Casting
A full storyteller voice, cast for weight at the bottom of its range. Single-narrator performed mode: one voice does narration, Norman, Hansel, the leprechaun, the frog-lady, and every side character. We tried separate cast voices for creatures; it sounded like a radio-drama insert. Character distinction comes from tempo, affect, and loudness inside one continuous performance. Norman’s italic interior thoughts get a subtle warm room treatment after render so thought reads apart from speech; Hansel stays dry.
Lock the takes that work
The opening line (“Chapter One. Welcome to Maryville, human.”) is a specific approved performance. Every rebuild splices that take back in. Broad re-renders were the biggest regressions. Surgical fixes, not chapter-wide regenerations, kept the PROSE register continuous.
Score as seasoning
Narration is the product. Epidemic folk beds, carriage ambience, tavern crowds, and sparse SFX sit low in the mix. Wall-to-wall music is out. Silence is a valid cue. Tim’s feedback kept Brooks exposition and Mary-Anne passages nearly dry. Shatter SFX trimmed from a 22-second debris tail to 2.4 seconds so it stopped ringing under dialogue.
Author in the loop
Tim’s June notes drove the revision pass. Interior thought vs dialogue was hard to hear; fixed with a light post-treatment, not a second voice. “Prithee” was landing as “privy”; all ten occurrences respoken and spliced. He preferred the slower narration pace; we left it. Full 19-chapter pack published July 2026.
