The Woman Who Toils: Being the Experiences of Two Gentlewomen as Factory Girls

Published in 1903, 'The Woman Who Toils' by Mrs. John Van Vorst is a social commentary detailing the experiences of two educated women who take on factory jobs to understand the lives of working-class women in the United States. Under assumed names, they navigate the harsh realities of factory life, from a pickle factory in Pittsburgh to a shoe factory in Lynn, Massachusetts, and a cotton mill in South Carolina. This landmark work sheds light on the struggles, hopes, and aspirations of female laborers, challenging societal perceptions of poverty and class. The book includes an introductory letter from President Theodore Roosevelt.
