Ireland Under Coercion: The Diary of an American (2 of 2): (2nd Ed.) (1888)

In the winter of 1888, an American journalist arrives in Ireland and finds a country in crisis. William Henry Hurlbert walks through a land where families are being dragged from homes on the Glenbehy estate, where armed constabulary line the roads, and where priests like Father Little plead for their parishioners against indifferent authorities. This is not history written from a distance. It is a diary, raw and immediate, recording what Hurlbert sees as he travels through the west of Ireland: the evicted cottages, the defiant tenants, the fragileTenant rightsmovement fighting for survival against the machinery of British coercion. An outsider's eyes make the familiar horrors fresh again. Hurlbert does not merely observe; he records conversations, transcribes grievances, and bears witness to a society being torn apart by landlord greed and imperial indifference. This is a document of moral witness, a travel narrative that becomes an indictment, and a window into a moment when Ireland's struggle for basic dignity captured the attention of the world.
